This resource comes with 13 pictures. Each picture has four questions:
- Who is this?
- Where is this person?
- What is this person doing?
- How is this person feeling?
Have your students look for all the details (e.g., each character's facial expression, body language, clothes, tools) in the pictures to gather information about emotions, locations, and social status. Then, ask them the questions above and how they make the inferences.
Making inferences is an important skill for reading comprehension. We use our prior knowledge, experiences and the details written in the text to infer the character's emotions, causes, and ending of the stories.
This skill is also very important to communicate with others effectively. It is said that over 90% of how we communicate with others is by non-verbal means such as facial expression, gestures, postures, tone of voice, which means we need to make inferences about others' intent by their non-verbal cues.
